The Black Toe Nail
Being one who plays soccer usually without wearing proper footwear (this, I blame the likes of PN Sivaji, Robert Lim and Douglous Moore for not spotting my talent when I was strutting my skills on the basketball court of Toa Payoh Lor 1 10 years ago, and thus denying me the chance of a soccer kit sponsership from Diadora) and also one who has a penchant for ton-jo-ing - the technique of using the toes to strike the ball, which gives the strike more power but zero accuracy - I probably suffered more black toenails than anyone else I had known in my life.
I can't remember the total number of black toenails I have had in total, but it probably numbered between 5 to 7, which is quite remarkable for one who has never gotten his toes jammed between a door. At least not yet.
Having had so many experiences of black toenails, I consider myself a master of dealing with them. In my opinion, the best way to deal with a black toenail is, not to deal with it. Patience is the absolute virtue one must have in order to subdue a black toenail. 1 week or 1 month, it will eventually drop off from the toe.
I do not know the Science behind black toenails. Someone told me before that it's the clogging of blood that causes the nail to turn black. It is only after the 'nerves' of the toe have been starved of air, suffocated and died, that the nail will come off on its own.
I am not sure if this is the true mechanism behind black toenails but since they come off everytime and I do not intend to pay a doctor to remove them, I usually leave Nature to run its course.
However, the last black toenail I had took longer than usual to come off. Even though some girls might envy me for getting black pedicure for free, I certainly did not want to live the rest of my life with one black toenail.
My patience was tested. After 2 months, I tried to quicken the process by rocking and pulling the nail whenever I was reminded of it but these actions only brought me pain and no result. Doubts crept into my mind if the nail would eventually give way.
But everyone has its time and so does the black toe nail. It eventually passed on on the birthday eve of Jeffry, 27 August 2006. Today, almost 3 weeks after its fall, I pay the nail its due respect, for showing me the art of perseverance and more importantly, for showing me that one should never outlive his supposed lifetime because after that, you will only become a nuisance to others.
Presenting, the now incinerated Black Toe Nail (together with my naked Big Toe):
