Chilli-fied Roses
I celebrated 2509 with Yeejia on 2409.
It was a celebration sans candles, as I had forgetfully forgotten to buy her a cake and to sing her The Song. And in the process, took away the chance for her to make a wish. This little hiccup aside, the day went quite well, which was significantly different from what I was anticipating the evening before.
I had not bought her her birthday present by that evening (and in fact, until now, still haven't) and since we had arranged to meet at her place in the morning, I think it wouldn't please her very much if she was to see me turning up empty handed. To make matters worse, the idea of the ricecooker could no longer be realised - because she had bought one herself - so I could not turn up at her door and surprise her with a potful of rice and spend the rest of the day in her room eating, which seem to me like a pretty good way to celebrate birthdays. I believe Bong would agree with me, if I were to add beers to the menu..haha...
Anyhow, ideas are never too far away from one who bothers to think. It finally struck me ,when I was well tucked in bed (not toilet) that I could get her flowers!
Getting flowers for Yeejia was a natural choice, if not the best choice, for someone once known by Giap as the 'Flower Boy' thanks to my flower heritage. So yes, I decided that the first thing I would do when I touched down in Paris the morning of 2409 was to get flowers. I knew exactly where I could find a flower shop as I had been running past one during my maison des mines' days.
I know some would bemoan my lack of creativity but creativity is at its best when it derives from something uncreative, as you will soon find out.
The shop that I went to is called 'Morceau Fleur', which translates to Flower Piece, which doesn't quite mean anything. The time spent at Morceau Fleur was interesting and yet, frustrating. I was there for about an hour, unable to decide what to get for Yeejia.
Initially, I wanted to buy her a pot of plant. I thought that it would be nice because plants last longer and seeing the plant probably would remind her of me. Ok, not original but getting flowers is already not original in the first place.
I lingered aroud the pot section, where I discovered this...
The plants above are called Veronique, which brought Veron to mind. I was thinking if I should get this but Yeejia is Yeejia and not Veronica Tan Yeejia, and so my search continued. Another plant then caught my attention...
'Pensées'. 'Pensées' litearally means 'thoughts'. Due to its name, this plant would actually make for quite a good gift...along the line that when she sees the plant, she'll know that I'm thinking of her. However, for some reasons unknown to me, all the pensées plants looked like they were wilting. I wonder if this was the natural state of all the pensées plants and if the person who named the plant had named it to reflect the state of thoughts of our generation.
Anyway, I then had my eyes on Sanglotines.
When placed together, the Sanglotines looked christmastich and I thought it would be nice to have one of these on the study table when the snow falls. However, when I took one up to see, it turned out that they looked ugly on their own. And since I wasn't quite prepared to buy 10 of them to create the christmas effect, it was no go to Sanglotines.
I actually considered buying this...
The fruits look like tomatoes. Can just pluck and eat when you're hungary. Pretty fang1 bian4 right? But no, I did not have enough balls in me to buy this as a present for my girlfriend.
At one point, I was actually feeling desparate and almost succumbed to buying one of those outrageously priced ready-wrapped bouquets.
Common cents got the better of me. Eventually, I found this...
and I bought this...
Chilli-fied Roses. Like the tomato-like plant, there's a pratical use for it - the chillis can be eaten when they turn ripe. Moreover, the roses add a romantic touch. When I presented Yeejia the bouquet, I told her that this represents that I was going to 'spice up her life'=)
Pretty much the same zhao1 when I gave Giap a thermometer some Christmas back and told (or rather, lied to) him that the thermometer was 'to measure how cool he is'.
The rest of the birthday celebration, I would reveal in bits and pieces in the future.
P.S. Bravo to Jeff and Weijie for taking the effort to email birthday greetings to Yeejia. For those who read the post before 2509 and never send the email, where's the spontaniety man?
P.S. 2: small bravo to Jiahao who tagged a birthday greeting. Nan de...
P.S. 3: Available November 2006 in Japan and US and march 2007, in rest of the world.
